They do a good job as long as the target is unarmored. Toss a Kevlar
vest on and with the exception of the 30-30, the MP5 won't penetrate.
The .30 cal. carbine will penetrate some lower rated vests, but has
nowhere near the capabilities of a modern bottlenecked cartridge. A
better all around choice is one of the .223 semiautos. The .223
beats any pistol with range, accuracy, penetration, power (The
exception being a few wildcat and rifle cartridge pistols) and ease
of use. The pistol is for when it is inconvenient to carry a larger
gun like a rifle or carbine, or when you need to carry a gun
concealed. If you knew you were going to fight your best bet is a
high powered rifle.

ps A shotgun works in certain situations, but really is considered a
specialty piece (Short range, low penetration, etc)
