Dear Ms.Alice Cypherpunk: We did it! Perhaps more than any other day in American history, May 14th will become the turning point for sensible gun policies in this country. On Mother's Day, May 14, 2000, over 800,000 mothers, honorary mothers, fathers, grandparents, and children marched in Washington, D.C. and 70 cities across the nation to send a strong message to policymakers to take responsible action by passing sensible gun laws. Since the March, a lot has happened. Donna Dees-Thomases, founder of the Million Mom March, became a Board member of The Bell Campaign, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, created in May 1999 to prevent gun deaths and injuries, and support victims and survivors of gun trauma. On May 18th, Donna and the other members of The Bell Campaign Board of Directors voted to re-name The Bell Campaign, the Million Mom March Foundation and form the new lobbying organization, the Million Mom March. Through Million Mom March Chapters across America, our goal is to educate America about the need for sensible gun laws, including: (1) licensing of Handgun owners, (2) registration of handguns, (3) creating consumer product Safety standards for guns, (4) closing the "gun show loophole," and (5) limiting gun purchases to no more than one a month. By forming chapters around the country, the Million Mom March can build a formidable presence to continue the momentum of the enormously successful Million Mom March on Mothers' Day 2000. Take the Next Step: there is a lot of work to be done by all of us who want to prevent the gun tragedies that occur each day in this country. *You can make a tax deductible membership contribution to the Million Mom March Foundation by visiting: http://www.millionmommarch.com/html/do/memberappl.html *You can form a chapter in your community.
