Club Owners Should Use Metal Detectors to Cut Gun Crime, Government Says

LONDON (AP) - The government is advising nightclub owners to install
metal detectors and to screen customers
more closely for illegal drugs in order to curb growing violence at
Britain's night spots.
Government guidelines published Thursday said metal detectors, which
club owners and promoters argue are too expensive to install, are now
vital if gun and knife-related violence is to be curbed in clubs.
The Home Office booklet, entitled "Safer Clubbing," said there should
also be a national survey of drugs deposited in clubs' existing "amnesty
boxes," where customers can deposit illicit drugs before entering clubs,
rather than be found carrying them if searched.
