School computer seized and student suspended Thursday, March 14, 2002 VICTORIA -- A computer has been seized from a Courtenay middle school, a student has been suspended, and the U.S. Secret Service is investigating after e-mail threats were allegedly made to several prominent Americans. Comox Valley RCMP seized the IBM-clone computer last week, Const. Dean Maxwell said yesterday. The seizure was made from Lake Trail Middle School following a complaint from Florida law enforcement officials about a series of threatening e-mails that originated from the computer. Maxwell said a 15-year-old, Grade 9 boy from the school has been identified as a suspect. The targets of the alleged threats were not identified. Maxwell would only say they were directed against "several prominent U.S. people" over three days. It's believed that two targets of the threats were U.S. President George W. Bush and his brother, Florida Gov.Jeb Bush. The Lake Trail student in question has been issued an indefinite suspension, said Lori Carpenter, principal of the 465-student school. The boy will have to appear before a school district hearing to determine if and when he may return to school, Carpenter said. "The student is not here right now," she said. "The student is at home." Maxwell, who has some expertise in computers and has taken part in several Internet investigations in the Courtenay area, is now examining the computer's hard drive. He said the Comox Valley RCMP are investigating with assistance from the Secret Service and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Maxwell would not divulge the content of the e-mails and characterized the number of alleged e-mail threats only as "more than three and less than 10." "The Secret Service is definitely concerned about the contents of these e-mails," Maxwell said. "It's evident that the Secret Service takes this seriously, especially after (Sept. 11)." The U.S. Secret Service operates a small branch office in Vancouver, housed within the U.S. Consulate. Robert Bond, the resident agent in charge, confirmed that the Secret Service is investigating but would not identify the targets of the alleged threats.
