Indonesians rally against possible war on Iraq
uploaded 25 Jan 2003
JAKARTA: About 100 Indonesian Muslims rallied today outside the embassies
of the United States and Middle Eastern countries to protest any war with
Iraq.
Protesters from the Hizbut Tahrir (Party of Liberation) Islamic
organisation hoisted banners condemning US plans for military action
against Iraq, which it accuses of developing weapons of mass destruction.
"We condemn any attack by America on Iraq. War against a Muslim country is
equal to war against the whole Muslim world," party spokesman Muhammad
Ismail Yusanto said.
Protesters earlier today rallied outside the Iranian embassy to ask Tehran
to oppose any attack, continuing on to the US embassy before heading on to
the missions of Yemen, Libya and Kuwait.
"We will call on those Arab countries not to support a US war on Iraq. It
is only possible for the US to attack Iraq if those countries provide
facilities," Yusanto said.
He said the group would stage another rally at the Saudi Arabian embassy
tomorrow. Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, has said it
considers any unilateral action against Iraq unacceptable, though it
supports the presence of UN weapons inspectors in Iraq.
