Robotics key to navy's LCS plan
As the US Navy (USN) progresses with its plans to rapidly develop

UK casts net wider for next surface combatant
A range of surface ship solutions - including a family of vessel
types
and novel 'mother/ daughter' concepts - are to be explored to meet
the
capability requirements laid out for the UK Royal Navy's post-2015
Future
Surface Combatant (FSC), according to Ministry of Defence (MoD)
equipment
capability and procurement officials.

US Pacific Command calls for additional aircraft
The US Pacific Command (USPACOM) has asked the Joint Staff for
additional
aircraft to bolster its strength in the western Pacific, as part
of the
repositioning of US forces in anticipation of a potential conflict
with
Iraq. Washington, however, has yet to approve the package.

Boeing promotes multi-mission aircraft concept
Boeing has conducted flight demonstration tours on both sides of
the Atlantic
designed to show that an aircraft based on a twin-engined
commercial airliner
is capable of competing effectively for the US Navy's
Multi-mission Maritime
Aircraft (MMA) programme and other key maritime patrol aircraft
(MPA)
requirements.

UNITED STATES - Submarine-launched UAVs closer to reality
Northrop Grumman has completed the first in a series of trials of
the
Stealthy Affordable Capsule System (SACS) that will enable US Navy
(USN)
submarines - including the existing Los Angeles-class
nuclear-powered
attack boats (SSN) and future Virginia-class SSNs and the SSGN
converted
boats - to launch a range of exotic new payloads, including
unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAVs), writes Nick Brown.
