Have you actually *read* the PEP?
Yes I did. I just misunderstood what you meant by "alter it". (The PEP
specifies alteration in the "Implementation" section, but only in order
to actually not alter it in the final input, ie the raw string
round-trips and end up as the original data. So it was you I
misunderstood, not the PEP...).
