Part A:

I'm starting this thread for information more directed towards potential
GSoC students. The student application round starts today and lasts
until April 3rd.

How it works: Cython can mentor students through the Python Software
Foundation. Application happens through Google, and then who gets
mentored is in part up to Google (number of slots for PSF), in part up
to PSF (especially how many, but I suppose this also depends on the
strength of the applications), and in part up to the potential Cython
mentors.

However, if you haven't been in touch with the Cython list and/or a
potential mentor in Cython before submitting your application, it is
much more unlikely that you will get your application accepted.

Again, some possible projects are at http://wiki.cython.org/codeprojects

Part B: About myself as a mentor an GSoC

I've come to the conclusion that a Fortran integration project is
something I'm interested enough in, and which is small enough and
feasible enough, that I could become a mentor. If you are interested in
doing Fortran integration, please read my notes on
http://wiki.cython.org/enhancements/fortran and provide your own
thoughts on my attack plan *in private* (as I'm more interested in
evaluating and talking to potential candidates at this point than to
resolve the final vote on the mailing list on the issue).

It's especially important to contact me early in this case because the
addition of Fortran integration should be voted on on the mailing list
before I can accept a student for this (and I won't bother to do this
until something is more ready for voting).

Constructs for parallell execution might attract me as well, though I'd
like to find a co-mentor with a stronger background in OpenMP.
Everything else has a much smaller chance for my part.
