What has happened in some cases is that somebody commits to doing a simple task and then gets mentored/gets a plan of attack written out. I.e. if you're saying you want to do this, I'm sure some of us could write up a recipe of how to go about it (which is still a lot less than doing it ourself, and dissipates knowledge of the code base in addition).
