As Devorah Berman found out, it is a fragment of a poem from Arthur Pfungst (1864-1912). The translation is correct, except for “hard to love” which should be “hard to live”, since the German word is “leben” (to live), not “lieben” (to love). The poem appears in the volume “Neue Gedichte” (New Poems) printed in 1903. Pfungs was a Jew living in Germany, industrialist. poet, buddhist and free thinker, all in one. He promoted in chemistry and mathematics.The philosophy beyond the verses is probably: that it is easier to be conformist than to live according to your own beliefs.Ossi Horovitz
