Czernowitzers...

What a particularly inspiring thread, especially with participation from rarely
read friends!

ANNE-METTE started the discussion with the remarkable epitaph for her uncle
Karl Ernst, born in Czernowitz in 1912.

DEVORAH immediately succeeded in identifying Arthur Pfungst as the author of
these lines.

OSSI gives us a first interpretation approach and he is on-topic, since he made
the poetry book of his parents
[http://czernowitzbook.blogspot.com/2017/06/stimmen-der-nacht.html] available
to all of us.

ANNEMARIE recalls her mother, who - like Karl Ernst - was born in Czernowitz in
1912.

JIM picked up the thread of conversation and discovered the Dr. Arthur Pfungst
Foundation, based in Frankfurt am Main.

BERTI supplies the title of the poem and offers us an extended interpretation
of Arthur Pfungst's lines.

ELLEN recalls her grandmother, who originated in Chudei, 25 miles from
Czernowitz.

What more can I contribute? Perhaps only,

• that my father Julius Hauster was also born in Czernowitz in 1912,

• Arthur Pfungst's sister Marie Eleonore was a well-known feminist who was
deported to Theresienstadt in 1942, where she died six months later,

• the Czernowitzer Tagblatt published in its 27/28.10.1903 issues a readable
and timeless essay by Dr. Arthur Pfungst under the headline "The Ethical
Deficit in Human Society".

No doubt about, Czernowitz-L Discussion Group at its best! Warmest wishes to
all of you!

Edgar Hauster

Yes, very interesting.

I saw that the author was Arthur Pfungst. I am generally well acquainted
with German literature but not this person. He seems to have been a
fairly minor figure, like many others, popular at the time but not read
anymore. I found no reference to him in my various anthologies and
reference works.

He was a manufacturer, Buddhist, and freethinker who played a role in
the founding of several organizations dedicated to ethical culture,
secular education, and the like.

He also gave his name to an educational foundation:
