Hi Bruce,

Great to hear from you!

Three suggestions:
1. On familysearch.org go to “Search/Records/New York Passenger Arrival Lists
(Ellis Island), 1892-1924”. Within this database do a search for Harry (or
Chaim) DORF. Not only have they indexed passenger names, but they also indexed
other names mentioned in each record, including nearest relative back home, and
person hosting them on arrival. Perhaps Harry or other family members, after
arrival, hosted newly arriving family members from their hometown in Galicia?
I’ve had success going this route. Also, Heri KARP, Harry DORF’s brother in
law, hosted Harry on arrival. Who else did he host and where were they from?

2. Check the GesherGalicia.org database for Chaim DORF’s birth record, or for
records of his parents. Note likely towns with the most records of DORFs.

3. Check the JRI-Poland database for the same.

Good luck, and go NY Yankees,

Bruce

Subject: [czernowitz-l] Harry (Chiam) DORF
Harry Dorf my grandfather was born in Galicia, according to his citizenship
request. He came to this country in October 1907. I have the ship manifest that
says he came from Czernowitz, which he moved to as a teenager. What would be
the best way to find the actual village where he was born?
Thanks
Bruce Wexler
