Dear Czernowitzers,
My name is Alex Grigorescu and I live in Bucharest, Romania. Some of you know me personally, others have been in touch with me for guiding and organizing Jewish heritage tours (that's what I normally do in Central and Eastern Europe). However, this is not what I am writing for. As you will see, it is something that I will NOT gain any profit from. Otherwise I would not have dared to send the message to the list. I am writing now in connection with a project I always wanted to do, but never had time for. But now, because of the pandemic, it was possible. I will try to keep it short. Some time ago I found the original architectural plans of the Czernowitz Temple, in an old Austrian architectural magazine (I think someone also posted about it some time ago). I wanted to print these, as I found them incredibly beautiful, but the quality and the resolution was bad. Last year I convinced an architect friend to redraw the whole facade of the Temple, according to those plans. I find the result amazing! I worked a lot afterwards to find a suitable printing workshop and after many tests I found the very best one in Bucharest, one that is normally working with top photographers and art galleries. The quality of the print is just wow! The owner found this project fascinating and agreed to do the job and work with me. Not very long ago I put them on etsy.com for sale. This is the plan: first I want to pay my architect friend for the huge work he has done redrawing it, so that I can convince him afterwards to redraw another lost/ destroyed synagogue. The rest of the profit made will be donated to a Jewish restoration or social project in Chernowitz. I don't expect the profit to be huge, I only hope that I can keep it going with another synagogue, and another one, and so on, and in the process also help some other Jewish restoration or social projects in Eastern Europe. My parents have been best friends with the grandson of Cantor Gedalie Gurman, murdered by the Nazis on the banks of the river Pruth, outside of Czernowitz. His name was Daly Gurman, born in Constanta, Romania. A charming man, I've known him since I was a little boy (I am 40 now). He passed away 7 years ago in Bucharest, may his memory be a blessing. His daughter is living in Romania. One of Daly's aunts and Ghedalie's daughters, Sonja, became a well-known actress at the State Jewish Theatre in Bucharest. So, this is it, I hope you find it useful and interesting.
