Dear François,

I would like to give you, representative for all others who have commented on
this issue, another argument in favor of keeping the modus vivendi of our List.

Bruce referred to the Czernowitz Archives in his message of 11/23/2021:
https://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg00406.html

The (searchable) Czernowitz Archives -
http://czernowitz.ehpes.com/archives/index.html - this means for 2002-2020:
33,562 POSTS OVER THE YEARS OR 1,766 POSTS PER YEAR OR 147 POSTS PER MONTH OR 5
POSTS PER DAY!

More than half of all posts were written between 2010 - 2015. Of course, these
are not all testimonies of Holocaust survivors, historical treatises, reviews,
much also belongs in the feuilleton and some in the miscellaneous section; last
but not least, cooking recipes are also included. All in all, this is an
extremely valuable collection. However we are aware that Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram & Co. are gaining the upper hand. This is another reason why we have
to think about what will become of our Czernowitz Archives in the very long
term. The WaybackMachine of the Internet Archive

https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://czernowitz.ehpes.com/

has been focusing on our website since 2006 and last made a backup on
11/22/2021. We are currently examining whether and how Czernowitz will remain
present for "eternity" as a real place and also as a place of (Jewish)
remembrance in virtual space, last but not least as the beloved home of our
ancestors.

As you see, as you see, Bruce, Jerome and I, we are doing our best to meet the
technical challenges. The structure of our Group, with its List, Website and
Blog, has proven its worth - GOOD NEWS in turbulent times!

Warmest wishes to all of you and please stay healthy & safe!

Edgar Hauster [MacBook]

" The idea of switching this email list to Facebook".
Facebook is a great platform, but the very concept and advantages of an
email-based mailing list is its neutrality, resilience, portability across
various devices and above all the ability to archive and search for older
messages and information.
Reading the answers from the other users, it seems we overall agree on this
topic :)

Besides, thanks to all of you, users of this ML, for the quality of your
conversations.

Sincerely,
François.

The idea of switching this email list to Facebook has been mooted. I am
a member of several Facebook groups. I find the presentation, and the
ease of inclusion of photographs, seductively attractive. But, in my
view, Facebook has disadvantages which render it unsuitable for this group.

* I find the order of posts extremely confusing.
* Once posts have receded into the past, it becomes more and more
difficult to find them. This negates part of the purpose of this group,
which is to serve as an archive regarding Czernowitz.
* What is the situation regarding copyright and intellectual property?
I have not read the small print, but I would not be surprised to find
that all the content belongs to Facebook.
* In which case, it is not impossible that the whole archive might
disappear at any time.

Best wishes to all,

David
