Dear Joyce,

Thank you so much for your message. Salomon Birnbaum, resident 29/8 11
November Street, Czernowitz, born 25.08.1890, married, 1 child, former
merchant, applies - of course unsuccessfully - together with 70 other Jewish
war invalids from the First World War to be exempted from wearing the Yellow
Star.

I have indicated the location at the USHMM in my mail of 01.07.2022 (image
96-99 of microfilm reel 1): https://bit.ly/3OAy6I9

This is just one of hundreds of lists taken from the Czernowitz Oblast
Archives. You are asking if the names can be searched via a search engine. I
don't know exactly, therefore I searched the USHMM Database of Holocaust
Survivor and Victim Names:

https://www.ushmm.org/remember/resources-holocaust-survivors-victims/database-of-holocaust-survivor-and-victim-names

I did not find this particular Salomon Birnbaum, so I assume that these
Czernowitz holdings have been digitized but are not yet available through
search engines. Check it out, the USHMM databases are very extensive and
extremely informative. Good luck with your research.

I am sure you will agree that I copy my answer to you to the List because
question and answer are of general interest. We are currently thinking about
how to utilize these hundreds of lists for our entire Group, this first list
was just something like a "finger exercise".

Hello,

The list that you included in your last group post included the last name
Birnbaum, which is the name that I have been researching as my mother was a
Birnbaum that descended from Czernowitz. Can you please further explain the
meaning of the list and if there's a way to use the microfilm library to search
for just the names that I am interested in, such as Birnbaum, Ribner, and
Herska?

Thank you,
Joyce Kammerman
