This is an answer to a message from Berti from April 2022.
Sorry I am answering it only now, but there were extenuating circumstances.
In the summer of 1941, when Germany attacked the Soviet Union,
The first thing they did was bomb the airport. To the best of my knowledge,
They did not bomb anything else in Czernowitz and vicinity.
We lived in the Blumengasse at that time, close to the airport
And to the chagrin of my mother, my father and uncle climbed
on the roof, to better see what was happening. There were a number
of times when the sirens sounded and we hurried to the air raid shelter,
but there were no further bombings.
Everyone also had a gas mask in case the Germans would use gas.
I remember the smell of the rubber from which the mask was made.
There were no further bombings during WW2. In the spring of 1944
As the Germans were retreating from Czernowitz a command-car full
Of munitions, in the center of the city, ran out of fuel and was
set on fire by German troops. The resulting explosion was very loud
and our neighbor Werner Munster who was convinced that either
The Russians or the Germans would blow up the Casserna near which
we lived, started to throw out the window the Rucksacks which
we all had packed, in case we had to flee suddenly.
Unfortunately, his elderly mother was in the garden, just below
the window, but she was not hurt badly and we had reason to laugh.
Soon after, on March 28, 1944 the Russians arrived in Czernowitz.
The two major joyous events I remember from my childhood are;
The Russians entering Czernowitz in 1944 and three years later
The United Nations decision on the partition of Palestine. By then
I was ten years old, but I did not know that there would be another war.
Greetings to all of you, Happy Hanukah and a healthy, happy
and peaceful 2023,
MImi
