Czernowitzers...

The renowned German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) reported
yesterday: “The Meridian Literature Festival [Czernowitz] is being relocated.
It is coming to Ukrainian cities close to the front: Odessa, Mykolayiv,
Kherson, Zaporizhzhya - cities where underground poetry takes on a whole new
meaning as readings in air-raid shelters.”

“We need culture to know what we are actually fighting for,” says Evgenija
Lopata, the director of the Meridian Literature Festival in Czernowitz. I last
met Evgenija in September 2018:

A literature festival is still possible in Czernowitz - in the embattled areas
in the south of the country, this would no longer be conceivable. Nevertheless,
Evgenija and her team, are still active there and are trying to organize
smaller cultural events, as for example, in Mykolaiv, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia
at the beginning of November.

Czernowitz stands for a cultural revitalization in Ukraine, despite all the
threats of war. Our List which has been a little quiet lately can also use a
kind of revitalization, despite all the political events, which we are looking
at anxiously and not without worries. A very good friend wrote to me a few
days ago: „I’ll focus on doing right rather than dwelling on what might
happen.“ For my part, I will try to bring you news from Czernowitz during the
upcoming cooler months of the year; in summer I will - hopefully - be going on
a motorcycle ride again. Next year in Czernowitz...?!
