Dear Jim,

Thank you so much for your message. By “dear children” my grandparents meant my
father Julius Hauster and his then wife Rahel [Schella] Greif. Rachel came from
a very wealthy Czernowitz family. Some of them emigrated to South America,
where they built up a "white goods empire". Unfortunately for my grandparents,
my father divorced Rachel in 1948 and later married my mother Ioana. Rahel also
remarried, to Wilhelm Brecher, with whom she lived in Düsseldorf. Rahel and
Wilhelm had a son: Daniel Cil Brecher, an Israeli historian and publicist who
lives in Amsterdam and has published the highly controversial book “A Stranger
in the Land: Jewish Identity Beyond Nationalism”.

Rahel died in Düsseldorf in 1998, where she was buried in the Jewish cemetery.
My father, who had no “access” to the Jewish cemetery due to his (second)
marriage to a non-Jew, has been buried on the other side of the cemetery fence
alongside my mother since 2001. Tempi passati!

Warmest wishes as always!

Fascinating and sad, Edgar.

Thank you!

Minor question: do you know about the Greif family you mention there?

Jim

Czernowitzers...

A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was
published on 01-AUG-1946. Let's take a journey into the past together to
comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!

In its „NEWS FROM ROMANIA“, “Die Stimme” reports: “The situation of the
Bukovinian repatriates is still bleak. The private letters which we were able
to inspect, and which we will reproduce in excerpts in the next issue, can be
summarized in the statement that the external aid is far from sufficient to
relieve the affected families of the terrible hardship they are suffering.”

A cry for help from my grandparents in Radutz dated 10-JUN-1946 to my father
Julius Hauster, who was in Bucharest at the time, documents just how desperate
the situation really was:

"Dear children, dear Julius!
Unfortunately, we have to approach you again to help us out with a telegraphic
transfer. Mother's accident has cost us 1/4 million, the rent payment for 2
months, the breadless weeks [...] and the non-payment of the pension arrears
for 1945 (no money available) have completely drained us, my heart is torn, not
being able to buy a hundred grams of butter for mother, who has deteriorated
terribly - I too am undernourished. We eat 1/2 egg each for lunch to save on
meat, and the same in the evening. [...] Where is the firewood? Heating oil 350
Lei (1/2 liter) a day, add it up! [...] Transfer by telegraph, rent payment is
urgent, everything else too! Your old people! We are starving! Ask you to do
something for us. We eat 1/4 bread per head per day and are starving like never
before in our lives. Help us quickly! Kind regards!"

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants
from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task
Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper
“Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.

I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you
to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
