Czernowitzers...

A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was
published on 01-OCT-1946. Let's take a journey into the past together to
comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!

The perennial issue of “CITIZENSHIP” is once again weighing heavily on the
Bukovinian Jews. This is not a theoretical question, but a matter of bare
survival in the post-war period characterized by hunger, cold and housing
shortages:

„Well, Hitler is long gone and expiatory justice has also reached Marshal
Antonescu. But the part of the North Bukovinian Jews who were rescued from
deportation are once again struggling - for how many times? - for citizenship.
The same Romanian citizenship that they gained and lost in the demonic game of
forces - this Romanian citizenship is now being taken away from them because -
well, because they lived under Russian rule for a few months, or rather because
the territory they came from fell to Moscow. [...] In the meantime, after all
the persecution and sacrifices, the remnants of the North Bukovinian Jews,
whose number can be estimated at around 30,000, are once again strangers in the
country where they were still equal citizens yesterday.“

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants
from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task
Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper
“Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.

I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you
to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
