Czernowitzers...

A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was
published on 01-MAR-1947. Let's take a journey into the past together to
comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!

Herzmansky was THE department store in Vienna. It was founded by the August
Herzmansky in 1863. The department store was located at Mariahilfer Strasse /
Stiftgasse  in the 7th district of Vienna. Max Delfiner was the sole owner of
the Herzmansky company from 1933 to 1938. Full of pride, “Die Stimme” reported
in its March 1947 issue on the visit of the industrial magnate originally from
Sereth in Bukovina: “MAX DELFINER IN THE LAND OF ISRAEL”:

“The industrial magnate Max Delfiner (New York), the co-owner of major
industrial plants in the country, stayed here with his wife for just under a
month. The purpose of the visit was not only to make contact with relatives and
friends, but also to obtain information about the economic situation in the
Land of Israel.
Mr. Max Delfiner, who already made notable investments in Palestine in the
early stages of Jewish reconstruction, also expressed a strong interest in the
social tasks of the Yishuv. There is a charity organization in Tel Aviv that
bears his name.”

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants
from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task
Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper
“Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.

I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you
to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
