Dear James,

Thank you so much for your kind feedback, which is very encouraging for me on
the one hand, and on the other hand so important because it shows me that “Die
Stimme” is generating interest.

And, no, there is no collection of articles in English. I read “Die Stimme”
issue by issue and select articles that spark my interest and that I consider
representative of the mental state of our ancestors and friends with increasing
distance from the Holocaust and World War II. I translate striking snippets
from these articles into English, relying on the ever-improving quality of
online translators, such as especially DeepL.

The last article on André Spire's visit to Czernowitz in particular takes an
interesting and insightful turn in the next issue. "Stay tuned" and thanks a
thousand again.

Hi Edgar,

Really enjoying all the "Die Stimme" articles you've been sharing with the
group. Do you have a collection of translated articles somewhere that I could
access?

All the best,
James Herer

Czernowitzers...

A new edition of “Die Stimme”, the monthly Newsletter for the Bukovinians, was
published on 01-MAR-1950. Let's take a journey into the past together to
comprehend what moved our ancestors, their relatives and friends back then!

In July 1925, the important French poet, writer and Zionist André Spire visited
Czernowitz. In an open letter to Dr. Max Diamant and Dr. Markus Krämer, which
was not without controversy in the contemporary press, he harshly criticized
the state of preservation of the old Jewish cemetery and the old Synagogue in
Czernowitz. Now, a quarter of a century later, André Spire recalls this
controversy and asks himself in the article “ANDRÉ SPIRE: CZERNOWITZ - MEMORIES
OF A VISIT” quoted in the March 1950 issue of “Die Stimme” from the French
“L'Écho Sioniste, as follows:

"What became of Markus Krämer and Max Diamant? Were they successful in
restoring the cemetery and the synagogue? Did they manage to protect them from
anti-Jewish destruction and bombing? And did they manage to save their own
lives...?“ [... Dr. Markus Krämer has the answers:] “What has become of me? I
have seen our lifelong dream come true and am striving to devote my modest
energies to the development of Israel. Officially, I do this as head of the
municipal section of the Ministry of the Interior. Our Max Diamant was deported
to Siberia as a Zionist for “re-education.” But there was one thing he could
not learn: to survive despite hunger and slave labor. So he rests in foreign
soil, and no Jewish gravestone covers his unknown grave. Unfortunately, we were
unable to complete the restoration of the Jewish cemetery as you and we would
have liked. The Jewish community threw him [Max Diamant] a bone here and there,
and so he cleaned and tidied up and preserved what he could. People just smiled
pityingly at his “whim” and it was only with great sacrifice that we were able
to publish his book, whose pictures are probably the only memorial to the
cemetery—because today it lies behind the Iron Curtain and no one knows what it
looks like. However, we have not heard of any destruction, and perhaps a time
will come when we can rescue the beautiful stones that preserve original Jewish
art, passed down from generation to generation of artists. The director of the
Jewish Museum in New York recently told my compatriot, the famous sculptor
Benno Reder, that he considers Diamant's book to be very important and
valuable."

Dr. Manfred Reifer founded the Chug Olej Bukovina [Association of Immigrants
from Bukovina] and decided to publish “Die Stimme”. He entrusted with this task
Dr. Elias Weinstein, the former editor of the renowned daily newspaper
“Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.

I will try to let “Die Stimme” continue to resound in the future and invite you
to follow me on this journey. Your comments are highly welcome!
