Even though you aren't dropping down a list of lookup values for the user to pick from, you still are using a lookup design, at least as I see it. Every time the user leaves one of these text fields, you need to query the lookup to see if it is valid, and if not, disallow the entry. You will have a derived field for the description in the bizobj, which you'll need to recalculate when the validation passes, and probably set to '' if it doesn't pass. It sounds like you are already doing this and just wondering if VirtualFields would make it better/easier.
