The appRecipes demo connects to a MySQL database that uses latin-1 
encoding. There are several recipes that have accented characters. Run 
the demo and search for 'creme', as there's 'Crème Brûlée' among others.

I can see the special chars in browse and edit, and I can enter the 
special characters and save the record without errors.
