A reflection on today's Scripture:
Although St. Paul used harsh language concerning the Galatians, calling
them "stupid" and "foolish", he longed for them to be free from their
quarreling, their sensuality, and their narrow understanding of the
Spirit. He reminds them that faith alone will free them -- a faith
"working through love". And in order for faith to work in this manner,
we must free ourselves of the domination of our ego. This means
submitting ourselves to the judgment of the Spirit, making choices that
seem to go against our own self-interest, our own pleasure. When we have
achieved this "breakthrough", then we soar in the Spirit, and know true
freedom. Having then, this mind of Christ, we can easily dismiss those
stresses that come from the Law. Our minds and hearts are focused on the
truths of Jesus' teaching, on the actions that praise our Lord and serve
our neighbor, rather than on contentious issues that strain the soul and
prevent the progress of true growth in Christ."
