A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

A Highway -- The Journey

This passage from Isaiah is one of those that rewards long and
attentive reflection and meditation. It is also a passage that
rewards simple reading. It is a passage so full of joy and of hope
that it is a passage for dark days and light. Image after image
reminds us of the gracious goodness of the Lord Our God.

The entire passage is a reflection on the mercy of the Father. Often
I hear people tell me that they pray to Jesus because He is more
accessible, and they often don't think of the Father. Sometimes they
do this even while praying the Our Father. This passage makes the
Father much nearer, much closer to our own lives. Think about the
last time you were really thirsty, think how good a cup of cool water
tasted then. Think about being without water for days on end and then
"streams will burst forth in the desert and rivers in the steppe."
This is the gift of a Father who truly loves us.

And amidst all of this transformation and wonder there will be a way
clearly marked--a way that will lead straight to the Lord. Walking
this way will announce to God that servants are approaching. It will
tell the world that legions of God's people are among them. This way,
this holy highway is Jesus Christ -- the Ultimate Gift from a Loving
Father to the people He hungers to save and to call home.
