A Reflection on Today's Scripture:
Today's readings make reference to the prophet Elijah and his
associated return before the coming of the Messiah. These readings
are mysterious and are not easily understood, but rather lead us to
believe that God makes His coming and His wishes known. He sends us
messengers -- reliable and trustworthy bearers of His intent and
desire that all mankind might be saved.
Throughout all of salvation history the prophets have faithfully
spoken out in the face of indeterminable adversity. They have coaxed
and admonished those who were weak, reluctant, stubborn and defiant.
They have risked and even lost their lives in defense of the truths
that were revealed to them by the very Spirit of God.
As we prepare again for the coming of Christ, may we take the time to
reflect on the message of all the prophets. Let the word of God that
was spoken in their hearts find a place and understanding in ours.
May we who were once ignorant, become enlightened; those who are
skeptical, convinced; those lukewarm, inflamed with love.
So then, may we speak with courage and conviction what we ourselves
have received. To a world that is longing for peace and love may we
announce the Good News!
"Prepare ye the way of the Lord!"
