A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

Those Macedonians had to be an admirable group of Christians -- beset
with every imaginable kind of trial, yet not given to grumbling,
anger, or recriminations. Instead, they "went the extra mile" in
service, a generous spirit, and in joy. No wonder St. Paul commends
them. And these were not just a few, these "saints" among them. He
includes a large number of people in his praise.

It so fits with the Gospel, which urges us to be complete and whole,
as our Father in heaven is complete and whole--to go well beyond the
good pagans, and there were any number of naturally good people who
were recipients of the Judeo-Christian revelation. No, we cannot
content ourselves with strict justice in our relationships or
behavior or attitudes -- rather, we are to compete with one another
in quietly unselfish, even heroic service. There will never be a time
when we can sit back on our laurels and say "enough!" -- for in
Christ, there is always more."
