A Reflection on Today's Scripture:

There is an important theme in both of today's Scripture readings. In
them, the necessity and indeed, the value of perseverance is
illustrated. Confronted with the tragic world events, we are probed
in many ways to consider what it is that we hold most dear -- what
realities and ideologies are worth our sacrifice -- perhaps our very
life. Daily reading of Holy Scripture helps us to form a set of
worthwhile values and gives us the encouragement (in fact, the grace)
to pursue them, to persevere.

Paul says to Timothy, "...be an example of charity, faith and
chastity." (1 Timothy 4:12) In addition he exhorts Timothy to devote
himself to reading Holy Scripture and attend to his duties.

Let us heed the Word of God given so graciously to us by our Creator.
Let daily reading of Holy Scripture form our values, direct our every
thought word and action. Then when confronted with tragedy, we will
not be aimless for too long, bewildered into a stupor, but have a
solid program to respond to the daily challenges of these
extraordinary times.

In the final words of today's Gospel, Jesus says to the repentant
sinful woman: "Thy faith has saved thee; go in peace." (Luke 7:50)
(Douay) With these words we're remended that when we fail to conform
ourselves in imitation of Christ, perseverance is still necessary -
perseverance in faith, hope and love -- determined to remember that
the merciful and forgiving sacrifice of Jesus has conquered evil, has
opened the gates of paradise for all and any who fall on their knees
and seek His sure and certain forgiveness.

We adore You O Christ and we praise You,
for by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world!
