Title: Meditation: Sunday, June 16, 2002

The Catholic Calendar for Sunday, June 16, 2002
The Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
    Exodus 19:2-6
    Psalm 100:1-3,5
    Romans 5:6-11
    Matthew 9:36--10:8

A reflection on today's Scripture:

It is interesting that only nine days after the Solemnity of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus, we read today: "At the sight of the crowds, the heart of
Jesus was moved with pity."
(Mt.9:36)

Jesus had a human heart just like us, and we've learned that he also had
great pathos -- He had compassion for all the humble. He allowed his
heart to be pierced by the centurion's lance so that we would visibly
know that he had shed his blood, right to the last drop -- for us!

Jesus continues to have compassion, as he calls ordinary mortals from
among us to minister to the world in His name: "Cure the sick, raise the
dead, heal the leprous, expel demons." If we have been called by Christ
to minister, are we hearing that call? Or has the clamor of the material
world and perhaps our own selfish desires stifled The Call?  If we're in
need of healing, are we making a serious effort to seek the salvation
God has brought us?

Almost everyone I've spoken with at length, deplores the moral decay of
our times. Have we ever stopped for just a moment and considered joining
ourselves spiritually with the Sacred Heart of Jesus by becoming an
instrument of His love in whatever manner God calls us?
