We have all had the conversation at one point or
another....do you or don't you leave your dogs outside
in your fenced in yard when you are not at home....but
I was faced with the reason I never have or will last
night.

This is shortened, but still long.....new house with
an alley in the back beside our fence. Hannibal and
Voodoo playing in the yard while we fix dinner.
Windows and doors open taking advantage of the cool
weather (and not paying for the air conditioning!).
Voodoo goes into his "hate bark", you all know the
one, then Hannibal joins in and actually leaves the
porch (not a typical lazy dog action) and starts his
"I am going to eat you" bark. I find a man in a car
with 2-3 kids and a sud-o-adult in the front seat of
the car, in the alley attempting to talk to the Danes.
I walk out, Hannibal comes when called, Voodoo is
really peaved and the guy yells.."where did you get
these Saint Bernards". I replied that they were not
St. Bernards...he wants to know what they are....I
tell him GD's. He wants to know where I got them so
he can get one....I tell him I have had them a
while....anyway, I finally manage to get Voodoo to the
porch, when this idiot (sorry) starts clapping his
hands and whistling for the danes. He continues to
try and get me to tell him "where to get a big dog
like mine" and that he supposed he will look in the
newspaper for one. I then, as I was being dragged in
the house by hubby, told him that they were very
expensive, ate alot and were probably not a good pet
choice for a family with 3 small kids. He still
stands there clapping for the danes, as hubby pushes
Hannibal and I inside and goes and gets Voodoo. The
man finally BACKS out of the alley, wierd, and leaves.
Now, there are many things that could have been done
and said, but there are TONS of folks in my town who
dog fight, and want a big dog to either fight or be
bait (kidnapped with mouth taped closed and fed to the
fighting dogs), so my solution of avoidance was the
best at the time. Lesson in this......sometimes being
in the house while your dogs are in the yard isn't
enough protection for your dogs!
