===== skunk =======
I used this recently when both my boys got it. There are two methods.
Massengil disposable douche can be sponged on the dogs, but since I couldn't
convince my husband to go the store and buy 20 bottles...I used method two.
Mix 1/4 cup of baking soda with 1 tsp. of dish liquid, then add 1 quart of
hydrogen peroxide. Sponge this mixture on the dog. It must be used
immediately after mixing.
===== skunk =======
Her friend told her that she had some, but in the shop she used Masengill
douche......the plain powder... not the "fancy" kinds. My sister used it and
was amazed. The smell had gotten on her robe.....after soaking in the
mixture, it was again usable. I also had the misfortune of having a Dane get
skunked. The side of the house also got it. After I took care of Tigger, I
used a hose-end sprayer and sprayed the house.
Now, there are many solutions floating around, but I stick to this. It is
so easy. Just mix the powder with water....per the instructions. Sponge
onto the animal, let dry. DO NOT RINSE.
===== skunk =======
Whoever suggested Massengil, that works the best, but we have used for years
(18yr-grooming) Massengil-medicated powder, the yellow powder, not premixed.
Double the suggested directions, and sponge on or we apply with dish soap
bottle, After a good cleansing bath with the smelliest shampoo you can get
your hands on. Usually a human shampoo will work best. Leave the Massengil
on, do not rinse it off. It is an enzyme, and enzymes neutralize enzymes.
Make sure though, most dogs get zapped in the face and neck areas, wash or
through out the collar if it got on there. Soak in douche solution if you
want, but make sure it gets treated too

Bathing/Skunk Essence
1 quart hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 tsp. liquid soap

sponge it onn...wait a few minutes, wash the dog.

While all the ingredients are harmless, it is recommended that you keep the
solution away from eyes, nose and mouth.

I have used this in varying quantities...you don't have to make the full
quart..just adjust the other ingredients (I guess and it still works). Any
kind of liquid soap works...I usually use dishwashing liquid.

The premises is that skunk essence is made up of sulfur molecules. The
materials in the recipe, when mixed together, form an alkaline peroxide,
which chemicallychanges the skunk essence into a completely odorless
chemical. The purpose of the soap is to break down the very oily skunk
essence, and make it more susceptible to other chemicals.

What about skin so soft...or does that only work on skeeters?
Another.......far out suggestion......tobacco juice.
Steep 1/2 pouch of chewing tobacco (in toe of 1 leg/toe of panty hose) in 1
gallon of water over-nite. Remove tobacco. Water will be black. Fill spray
bottle 1/2 water & 1/2 juice. Spray dog's
immediate perimeter - NOT where dog sits. Just all around. This is a
natural insect deterent.
Spray every other day.It works real well for me.

Another suggestion: a bath in Joy dishwashing....AND spray area dog lives
in with 1/8 cup/water in spray bottle.

Another suggestion: Fly strips out of the dogs reach, of course. I hate
them...but they do work.

Murphys Oil Soap /Bathing
Sorry, but Murphys is made from pine trees. B4 the company was bought out,
the original company even recommended it for pet bathing.
Its pH is correct for animals, it doesnt burn the eyes, it lathers and
rinses richly and easily. It leaves a clean, fresh, but very mild scent
which doesnt linger. It kills fleas (but so do all soaps.) It leaves a
shiny coat and you can clean the bathroom with it afterwards. Ive been
using it on generations of Great Danes for at least 10 years and others on
the list have used it with just as good results as I. Ive tried to use
other dog shampoos (MelaMiracle for one and another that was formulated for
Yorkies) without being happy and keep going back to Murphys.

Oh, I forgot to mention that its cheap and easily available.
It WORKS! No Dandruff, SHINY coat, no ALLERGIC reactions, even in my
sensitive skinned bitch. No Dry hands or Dog skin, and best of all it is
VERY affordable!

MURPHYS OIL SOAP
Use it like shampoo, you CAN cut it 1/2 and 1/2 with water and SPRAY it on.

Bathing
Blowing their coat
The Ivory hand soap approach is one Ive been using for about 10 years now.
For some reason, it does get the hair out better than other soaps. This is
not a soap I would use as a shampoo normally, but during the blow its a
wonderful tool to use. When you bathe Lucy with it (make sure its the
original, white Ivory HAND soap, and not the dish detergent or any of the
newer Ivory hand products) one of the tricks to success is to rinse well
with the warmest water thats comfortable for the dog. It helps to use
steel wool over the tub drain (regular steel wool, not a steel wool scouring
pad) to catch the hair and protect your plumbing. After bathing, towel dry
vigorously. Once shes dry begin the job of brushing. Work the dog in
quadrants, always working from the rear forward. Make sure you part the
hair and work down to the skin. One treatment like this, toward the end of
coat-blowing, seems to get most of the problem at once. It also helps a lot
to control the everyday amount of hair lying around the house if you follow
this treatment with a quick daily brushing.

Bathing/fleas
Just passing on something I found...It is a hot oil treatment for dogs and
cats. It is Pure Soft Hot Oil Treatment by PurePet. One 8 oz bottle makes
up to 96 gallons. After Dakota's bath I mix 1 tsp to a gallon of water and
pour it over him. It rinses the soap completely.
It makes him so soft and takes away the "doggy" smell for weeks. You can
also mix a tsp in a spray bottle and spray in between baths. It remoistens
his skin and coat and again takes away the "doggy" smell. It works
wonderful on his ears too. I wet a washcloth with it and wipe out his ears
when they get to smelling. That too lasts for weeks. It also claims to
control fleas although I can't say for sure. Dakota hasn't had fleas yet.
That season is yet to come! Just a little something I love and thought I'd
pass it on. It is in J-B Wholesale Pet Supplies catalog and is $8.75 for 8
oz bottle.

Has anyone ever heard of using Skin So Soft (an Avon product) following
the dog's bath, or using it to "mist" the dog when they come inside with the
"doggie" odor?? If so, could you specify how to use it?

If you have a healthy dog, there should be no doggy odor at all. IMO, SSS
smells awful, so it wouldn't be an improvement anyway. SSS can be used as an
insect repellant, but it is very oily and tends to attract dirt, even when
diluted.
==== skunk ========
My danes are famous for stirring up skunks. They came back one time so
badly sprayed
that I got sick to my stomack just getting close to them. I tried
everything, and as a last
resort used liquid Era. It worked. I'm not sure how good it was for the
dog, but it was better than the smell. I would only use it in severe cases,
but it did work.
