When we lived on the mountain, I always placed a cow bell (very stylish Swiss 
type) hanging from a leather strap attached to their collar.  Our dog never 
left the house without it.  It would make such a racket that not only were 
the deer scared off, but the bear, mountain lion and her cubs, and other 
critters on the mountain would leave.  There would be no mistake that any 
animal in the vicinity was not wild game!

Just a thought!
