I'm an Animal Control Officer who carries a professional strength
pepper spray that is only available to law enforcement officers and I
have seen dogs that fail to react to it. For best results spray
directly into the eyes and open mouth. Be careful that the spray
doesn't drift back on you - it can incapacitate you just as quickly as
the dog! And that make for a really bad day! I would hesitate to
reach in and grab a collar of *any* dog that is in a serious fight
with another animal. But when human life or limb is at stake, that's
another story. I just interview a 10 year old today that has lost the
use of her hand, probably permanently, from the bite of a dog owned by
her baby-sitter. It took a combination of pepper spray and a
fiberglass police baton to get the large breed dog to release. The
911 tape documents 7 minutes from the initial call until the dog
released it's grip on her. As for suggestions, I really don't have a
good answer. I switched from Mace to Pepper Spray recently hoping to
get better results. But the temperament of the individual dogs and
the level the fight has escalated too are big factors. For some
spraying water or throwing objects works well. Use what you have
available and be careful.
