Sounds like it should be OK to merge, then.

I think it would be better if you always needed to explicitly ask for
things to be treated as XML, even if you have compiled with
--enable-xml (at least until such time as that becomes standard in the
future). That way you won't unintentionally create XML patches in repos
you intend to share with non-enable-xml users.
