In the user manual, I am wondering how to refer to directories.
Intuitively I used "directory" rather than "dir" because the latter is a
bit informal. But it occurs to me that "folder" will be better
understood by users -- particularly novice users, who are the most
likely to need a user manual. It's also shorter than "directory", which
will help the HTML output (which isn't hyphenated in most browsers).

If I use "folder", I'll need to be consistent. That means mentioning it
in doc/manual/HACKING[0] and sweeping the existing documentation.

Does anyone have an opinion on this issue?

[0] note: that file doesn't exist in the main branch.
