unfortunately for that rule, (*puts the RM hat on*) I won't let a patch even
remotely resembling this into the release branch, let alone that late in
release. Although I understand that the risk associated with such cleanups is
relatively small, it's far from negligible and the benefits are nearly
nonexistent. These activities should be done after the release. Of course,
tagging the "clean" state is still perfectly possible. It just won't be the
release tag.
