This is the scheme that many Gnome-related projects (among others, of course) use, so it will certainly be familiar to at least some FLOSS developers. For instance, Banshee current development is 1.5.x, and the next "official release" for inclusion in distro repositories will be 1.6.0. (At this point the Gnome release schedule is even tuned to try to coincide with Canonical's Ubuntu schedule so that 1.6.0 should be the release for Ubuntu 10.10, IIRC. I wonder if Darcs might also benefit aligning itself to the Gnome/Ubuntu release schedule as well...)
