I suspect some confusion has arisen because until very recently (like, a
week ago) both stable and testing shipped GHC 6.8.  Thanks to the
sterling work of the debian-haskell group, testing now ships GHC 6.12.

For what it's worth, I don't think it's a matter of confusion. It wasn't that we believed we could support Debian packaging best by supporting stable, we just felt that Debian stable was a good indicator of what was reasonable to expect our users to have.
