The problem with the multiple dimensions is that there is no very clear linear order on the versions, as Simon Michael requested. Of course we could put the values for the different dimensions in a decreasing order of significance from left to right, but then we have to know what this order of significance is. > Also, we could stick to using version numbers for the semantics instead > of letters, and it should still be readable: > > 1-1-old > 2-1-hashed > 2-2-hashed The two numbers don't look so well. It gets very formulaic. Even using words people don't understand is, I think, better than using numbers people don't understand. So "1-1-old" would become "darcs1-mergers-plain". Reinier
