Why is this the case?  Is there a reasonable way to confirm that
the problem is really due to system calls on Mac being slow?

Would benchmarking Darcs on PureDarwin give us any insights?

What could we possibly do to make Darcs faster on Macs aside from
just making it faster on all platforms?
