So I think this is a sort of patch that *may* have wider reaching implications that it looks and we want to be very very careful that we think through the effects of accepting this patch. While I can see how this might improve the portability of Darcs, I'd be worried about any sort of impact to consistency in its behaviour (if each platform that Darcs is built on will have its own idiosyncratic behaviour).
