boucmas improvement is very good.
In October I made a version based on darktable 1.05 that utilizes
a gtk notebook to group the modules.
This is a improved version of my previous attempt, which had a ugly
layout/design.
Grouping the modules, combined with "mouse-over" tooltips
is still my personal favourite in terms of usability.
I know, there's a lot of discussion whre to put it, that's just my 2
ct.

well the new plugin toolbox was a quick fix to have something cleaner
in 1.1 it never was meant to stay nor to be perfect....
we could hack some stuff in there if it's not too costy, but the plan
is to redo it "cleanly" for 1.2
I would personally like to move it to preferences, but that's a
subject all devs don't agree on, so a satisfying solution is still to
be found...
