David, you can start darktable from a terminal with -d opencl and have a look at its output. If something goes wrong you would see a lot of error messages (typically error numbers -4, -5 and -6) at run-time and statements that darktable falls back to cpu. Occasional fallbacks to cpu are OK. Sometimes darktable detects that it should better run on cpu than gpu.
