Yes, that's the correct behaviour.  Not sure if there's a plan to 
enhance this feature to make it pixel-pipeline... I think the current 
implementation was done this way for performance reasons.

Sounds like it's a bug.  There's no intention to keep snapshots around 
for any length of time.  If you leave darkroom mode all snapshots are 
lost, for example.

I think I've seen this discussed somewhere; it could have been
