Now its a bit late but think about moving to btrfs filesystem or zfs which is 
btrfs big brother. 
Snapshots do not replace backup but are extremly  cheap. 
Create a script that takes a snapshot before it starts DT or simply create a 
snapshot every 5 mins and delete after 1 hour or a day.
