Newer users are likely to have the most perspective on little bits of missing
functionality like this, I would think. I'm not sure where the alarm is coming
from, but it should be pointed out that all that's being discussed is making a
couple of data fields that already exist per image usable in the filtering
syntax just like any of the other ones already there... hardly a case of
"feature-itis". :D

The image organization aspect of darktable is a part of why some people use it,
it's already there, and always has been. Included in this are some nice
features for adding geotagging to images. Until recently, that data wasn't even
added to the XMP files, only stored in the database, and some people don't even
use XMP files. This means using external Exif tools isn't always a solution.
I'm really bewildered that adding a couple of filter properties is being met
with this response, especially considering the incredible amount of overhauling
being done on the 2.7 dev version currently. That's just weird.

Exactly. It's an omission, one that might seem odd to somebody coming to
darktable from somewhere else, and all you did was point it out.

I don't think it's complex, exactly, just a different case than what's already
there, and might take a little thinking about how best to handle a special case
that might be used in conjunction with the already implemented properties.
There are plenty of smart people doing harder things than that in git master
lately. Just sayin'.
