Alongside the main library.db and data.db databases. Prior to darktable 3.4 backups were only made on program upgrade (named "data.db-pre-3.2.1" for example). Since 3.4 there is also an option to make periodic backups (snapshots): https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/preferences-settings/storage/#database
