Hello and thank you
Sorry, I did not write it correctly, since I was copyig the config and
cache folders between laptop and desktop backwards and forwards and in
one of these operations some things were (presumably) not copyed and I
get the full informations on xmp's. But I do have a full copy of some
ten days ago.
Anyway thank you for the help

I, like Maurizio, would prefer to understand what you term
"unnecessary things".
If you're going to do a clean install of darktable 4.0, on which
operating system, Windows, Linux or Mac? The locations will vary with
the O/S.
To address your specific questions:
* Is this a good idea? - Don't know since you haven't been more
specific.
* As the xmp files are also stored on the external drive with the
files, do they automatically fit in the new import? - If you tell
darktable where to look for the files, it will also find the
sidecar files associated with the image files, if they're
maintained in the same folder as the images.
* Do I have to delete the config and cache folders manually? - If
you're uninstalling a prior version of darktable, first back up
all your darktable user config and library files (on Windows -
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\darktable), then delete the
folder in Windows before doing the delete/reboot/installation.
* Off course I can then only import, what I want to have in the new
setup. - This is YOUR option when it comes to importing.
* Does anyone have a recommenation? - See the above four responses.

Hello everybody
I am with darktable since three years, in this time a lot of
unnecessary things have accumulated in the database. For this reason
I am thinking about setting up the program completely new an I think
the new darktable 4.0 woul be a good time to do this.. My data are on
a external ssd drive. Of course I woul make a saving of these data
before deleting the existing application.
I am aware, that I would have to import all the pictures again, now
my questions:

I appreciate your help
