have you tried the ImageMagick tools yet? By default, the "convert" tool is quite a good candidate for many types of (batch-enabled) image processing. If that doesn't do the trick you can still use e.g. GIMP with a bit of scripting effort. (Though I can't help you much more in this direction I'm afraid..)
