Hi Mark,

all that - together with your original issue - indicates that you might 
have a broken installation of darktable. The program has a modular 
structure. If there are leftover modules of an older installation around 
they could cause darktable to do all kind of weird things.

Please de-install darktable completely. Make sure there is nothing left. 
Have a double check on the place where darktable stores its modules 
(depends on your distribution; /usr/share/darktable or /opt/darktable 
are typical places).

Then re-install darktable again and repeat your tests.
